So my boss who has generally looked at my gun interests with nervous curiosity runs into the office today and says "I needed your gun last night!" This guy isn't hardcore anti-gun but he is a Democrat and I can tell from his demeanor he probably favors fewer guns and more gun control. Well he did. Now he suddenly has a different attitude. I guess standing face to face with a thief does that to you.

He said his dog went crazy in the middle of the night and when he went outside he interrupted someone shattering the window to his BMW. He actually had a conversation with the guy while he told his wife to call the police but the guy ran off before the police showed up.

He says if he had my gun he could have shot him. I explained that from what I heard from you so far no you could NOT have killed him just for breaking into the car and these were the types of things they explain in the classes I have taken. He says "I wouldn't have killed him, just shot him." GROOOOAN OK, we have some work to do here.

I said what I would have done is held him at gunpoint and had the wife call the cops. If he runs away let him. If he advances to you then you can shoot. He said yeah that sounded smart.

I think we may have a new BayouShooter in the making. I invited him to the range and I can tell he's thinking about it. Now before the bashing begins, he's not an idiot. He just needs some educating and help.

What the hell could they possibly have a conversation about?

Boss: Get away from my car!!

    BG: **** YOU!

    Boss: **** YOU, Buddy!

Convo repeats until BG runs away.

This is how the boss described it:

    Boss: What's going on?

BG stops beating on window with rock.

BG: Your window is broken man.

    Boss: Honey call 911!

    BG puts rock down.

BG: Hey man I didn't do it.

    Boss: Stay right there!

BG: Man I didn't break your window.

    Boss: Just stay right there.

That's about it. From what I gather there was no aggression from the bad guy at all.

If the Governor has his way breaking that kind of law will severely screw you for life. I'm sure you've seen his new proposal on the sex crimes deal.

    BG puts rock down.

BG: Hey man I didn't do it.

Boss: Stay right there! Starts to squeeze trigger

BG: Man I didn't break your window.

    Boss: Just stay right there.

    BLAM!

    BG: You shot me!

    Boss: I didnt shoot you.

    I was thinking more of:

Boss: Don't move, you activated the security system! The claymores are active! FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T MOVE!!!
Boss tiptoes away from the car... stalling and waiting for the cops to show up...

Cops show up and find BG sweating profusely and still holding rock...

You couldn't shoot him? I was more or less believing that you can legally shoot a burglar. Car is an extension of your home so I would imagine it to be the same way as it would if a guy was in your home? I still need to take my CCW class, though.

You don't want to shoot unless your life or the life of a loved one is in danger, period. NEVER shoot to protect property. If you can retreat safely, retreat. Let the insurance company deal with it, and pay the deductible.

That $500, $1000, whatever - is only going to cover the first couple hours of the attorney you are going to NEED to hire. As recently was discussed, the *average* good shoot costs $100K in legal fees.

Unless they are going to try to kill me, my family etc - no bang bang.

    $100k? I thought it was $10k?

You know, I actually asked Givens during lunch how many of his students involved in shootings were sued or arrested. He said 0.

Maybe this would be an interesting thread. I'd like to know the break down on costs for the "average" defensive shooting with no charges filed. With all due respect, I'm calling ******** on the $100k.

And in all seriousness, tin foil hats off, be careful what you guys write. It lasts forever on the internet and could be used against you if you are involved in a questionable shooting.

It's funny...I've converted a couple "non-gun people". They seem to skip straight from anti-gun to wanting to shoot everyone and everything.

The hard part is teaching them when NOT to shoot.

As for this case, in my CCW class we watched a news clip from a WWL New Orleans series about guns, where a homeowner shot and killed a non-aggressive thief who was breaking into his car. The court ruled the shooting as justified (protecting property) and charges were dropped.

I'm not saying you should, but I'm pretty sure you could.
