On day when I was there a guy 3rd from the end had his son sitting on the shooting bench. The kid grabbed a 22 that was facing the left side and it went off sending a bullet by 3 people. I was loading up because I don't like to be at ranges with a lot of people - and it had gotten packed.

I would bet there is still a 22 round in the top left roof beam.

We have to remember folks have the right to handle their property in their vehicles. Of course if the range is on private property that is up for debate.

That said: you did the right thing. Possibly could have been a bit more tactful with him. Excuse me: I noticed you were pointing the muzzle at the folks down range. Could you please refrain from doing so. At that point walk away or say appreciated. If said individual does not comply report him immediately to the RO, RSO, or CRSO or staff.

I have been approached by ROs before who were rude and power tripping over a non issue. Im a CRSO. Its our responsibility to keep everyone safe and educate. To gain rapport you have to be social and tactful but when it comes down to brass tacks you have to establish yourself as a professional/educator and take control without overstepping. If you're not on duty be careful how you approach folks: its an art. Im a bit of a hammer personality wise when dealing with arrogant individuals but I have learned to be kind, calm, cool, and collect.

Yup, I shouldn't have called him an idiot, and I knew that as I was walking away. That said, I felt like I was polite and respectful up to that point.

It's definitely an art, and I perhaps should have tried more to build rapport with this guy.

Thanks. This has all been good food for thought.

I wish it was 1500 yards. Im limited to 10 acres. My range is only 250 yards. When I shoot long range I go to the hunting lease. We have an 1100 yard range there. And most of the shooters there are more skilled than I am.

After having a 686 pointed at my head from a woman who lost control of it, then caught it mid air with the muzzle facing towards the glass at Bass Pro a few years back, i swore off public ranges and built one behind my house. Sadly that wasn't the first major safety issue I've had at public ranges but it was the last one. I completely understand the OP's point of view. I probably shoot a little less now as to not bother the neighbors all the time, but my safety is no longer in the hands of some moron with no training
I got some good memories from your range swampydog. Glad to see you still on here. We need to meet at my range soon. Mabe another black powder day

I was there shooting with others before they put the baffles in place. Everyone was still shooting and the range was hot. I look over and the guy at the end right bench was at the 25yd line stapling a target up as others were firing down range. I yelled at him to to come off the range while it was hot and to wait for a cold range call. I guess luckily for him there was no one at the bench next to him shooting at targets while he was busy down range changing targets. Maybe would have got his attention to hear bullets whizzing by. Stupid almost got fixed by a bullet.

There are lots of holes in the ribbed metal roofing of both the pistol and rifle ranges! If you look at how many there are you'll shudder at all the negligent discharges. Still, I like Sherburne - go there all the time myself. Hate shooting indoors. Winter hunting season you have to go during the week to get any peace, but I shoot every couple weeks on Saturday/Sunday at first light, and there is often no one there for a good long while. That said, I've seen stupid a few times at Sherburne, and even brought it once myself unfortunately - new shooter friend of mine. Gave him hell for picking up his firearm while we were cold. Despite that big blunder, a couple trips in he could recite all gun safety rules from memory, and I'd gotten him doing clearance checks every time the gun leaves his hands. But when they first start out it's definitely best to have someone experienced there with them drilling good habits into them.

How much would you charge a fellow bayoushooter to shoot your 250 yard range? I can shoot for really cheap at Precision Indoor in BR, but the bullet holes in the back walls and the clientele don't inspire confidence. I don't go to Sherbourne because of the same reason, so I always end up driving out to Nick's near Garyville and pay the 22 bucks, and that's only for 100 yards.

If he let you shoot on his land for cash, that’s a HUGE liability risk.

True. Didn’t think of that. It’s less liability risk than probably some BS regulations with other useless govt entities. I forgot we don’t live in a free country anymore

At least it was not a semi auto. I use a private members only range here in E Texas, and the Ouachita Parish range operated by the Sheriffs dept there. Last Thanksgiving my son was over with my 9 year old grandson who wanted to shoot, we went to the private range two days, mostly him with a .22 rifle, Second day I let him try a couple of handguns, again mostly .22, but he did try my K 38, liked it ok and no problems, and we let him try one shot from my Sig p365 9mm semi auto. To be safe only one round in the chamber and none in the magazine so no problems with a runaway gun. My son and myself also stood right behind and beside him just in case, again no problem he handled it ok but did not care for it. At least he got his curiosity fulfilled.

Good on you for leaving. I’m not sure how I would have acting. Confronting unknown folks holding a gun is a risky business. Maybe it’s about the approach. I usually only shoot at my lease in Arkansas. It’s not perfect but it’s isolated.

That place has been a **** show for years.

You'll never catch me out there again.

This. It was nice WAY back in the late eighties until about 2006 or so when on most days (weekends included) you basically had the place to yourself. Now, no way I'll ever go there again.

    I went Friday, Sept 10.
    It's open.
BTW, I've been there many times this year and have never seen a problem.
I go mostly on Fridays, and early-ish. 10 am.
Once on a Saturday, about 8-9 am.
Always only a few people there, only seen kids once, everybody have always been very safety conscious and are very knowledgeable, experienced gun enthusiasts.
