Looking for a place to hunt squirrel and rabbit mainly. Kinda tired of Sherburne, love the place but dang it gets tough unless I get the boat out. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I’m in Denham Springs but open to drive a couple hours.

You live right by the Maurpas management area. Get a canoe and paddle to any ridge with a cluster of oaks that are producing. Should bag a limit.

I also have been told that you can walk next the rail tracks at the check in station near I-10 and Airline. First Gramercy exit coming from Baton Rouge. If you go by boat stay on the smaller canals. Blind River is too dangerous to attempt a canoe trip. People in other boats will swamp you.

Can’t wait for my son the get a little older to bring out with me, gonna teach him to love squirrel, and I could use a hand moving a 17’ canoe around. Thanks for any input. Gonna hit Sherburne early next week then Marepaus second half.

I've had a lot of success over the years in Pearl River WMA. Drive in, park, walk into woods and start hunting.

Due to the decline in small game hunters, squirrels are everywhere. I've killed them on public and private land. You can kill them in your backyard in the city. Still hunting and with dogs. I'm primarily a deer hunter, so my small game hunting is done after the deer season (when you can also do some post-season scouting). It is a lot of fun and great way to introduce kids and adults to the outdoors and hunting.

Every squirrel hunter has their preferred way of skinning them and cooking them lol.

Here are some pics from the last good hunt I went on in 2020 with a mountain cur doing the treeing. My buddy and member here "Marlin" cooked up a delicious squirrel gravy afterwards.

I also say try the Pearl River WMA. I have never left empty handed. I usually go after deer season when it is a little quieter.

This will be my first-year squirrel hunting. I wanted to take my son hunting, but he is a little too loud/squirmy for deer. I am excited to try out the Pearl River WMA.

I do not shoot them, but they eat peanuts I put on top of my wood fence at the back of my house daily.
