They do get thin but it works. 30-06 brass can easily be had by walking around a range and picking up the brass people leave behind. Not ideal but in these times anything that works is better than nothing. Old GI 30-06 brass works great because it is thicker and harder. You have to heat it before sizing to make the brass softer.

I don't have a Whelen, but I do have a 358 Win, which is based on the 308 Win case. I have always used 308 cases and neck them up to 358 with stellar results. Accuracy is sub MOA and I've never lost a case to neck splits. I've been doing this for almost 20 years. I'd say try necking up 30-06 cases and see how it goes. I do advise using a tapered expander plug on your sizer die.

You can make 35 Remington out of .308 brass but not .35 Whelen, you need 30/06 brass for that. And yes the necks will be thinner but it works and it’s cheap enough you can throw the brass away after you shoot it. Just make sure you make the brass so you do try to put it in an 30/06 gun. It wont fit as a loaded round and you won’t want to use the brass for reloading as a 30/06 round.

Did you mean to say 358 Win instead of 35 Rem from 308? 35 Rem is a different head size than 308. You can make 35 Rem from 308 but it takes a considerable amount of swagging and perhaps some lathe work.

I used 270 brass to make 35 whelen brass. 270 brass is a bit longer than 30-06 so that when it is resized it comes out to the proper length. 30-06 brass resized to 35 whelen comes up a bit short. You can resize the 270 brass by running it through a 30-06 die first and then the 35 whelen or you can anneal the 270 brass in the neck/shoulder area before resizing to 35 whelen which prevent the brass from splitting when trying to resize. Be sure to lubricate inside the case neck also to help facilitate the expansion to 35 caliber.
The brass lasts okay and I was experimenting with 250gr bullets in the Whelen.
