I decided to mount my own scope recently. Bought the tools, the tourque wrench, level etc.

Tonight, while attempting to mount my first scope, the torx bits snapped. I confirmed the torque ratchet was set right. Had no issues with mounting the rings on the rifle. Yet when I attempted to set the ring tops (??) the bits broke before I got to the recommended torque setting.

    Milwaukee bits, T15 ??

did I do something wrong? Cheap bits?

"Bits" as in more than one bit broke? Did it/they snap off and leave a chunk stuck in the screws or just snap off one of the bits "fins"? What torque setting were you working with?

I have broken off bits cranking down on my hammer drill, but never with a hand operated torque driver set that low. You say you bought a new torque wrench? What Brand? Any chance it is set up wrong or defective? Did the broken bit fall out of the screw head, or is it still stuck in there?

It’s a Teton, New. The bits were Milwaukee. Broken piece came out fine. Repeated the process today with no problem.

Crazy, for sure. All I can think is that these bits were bought when a new Home Depot was opening. I picked them up crazy cheap. I wonder if Milwaukee made a lesser spec product for a loss leader for HD???

Most everything scope related for me has been 16 to 18 inch pounds and it takes very little effort with an inline driver to reach that. Using a standard type torque wrench with a 90 degree lever gets people into a little trouble more often than you might think. I can’t say I’ve seen the bit give way before the screw though. Maybe some knock off bits? I have a cheap but decent very large set of Kobalt bits from Lowe’s and none have ever broken.
