The gas key looks good to me, but I don't see any staking in the castle nut. Is it staked somewhere not seen in the pic?

If not, it's easy to do yourself but it would still be a tad dissappointing.

I looked on Academy's website earlier and they had some M16 looking rifles (I know right) for under 600, one by the same company was $900. I wish I knew enough about them to say what was a fair price and what features to look for, but I don't.
I'm the same with with pistols, mostly. Went with a Glock first and never saw a need to branch out.

I'll probably end up doing something similar with a $5-600 AK.

academy rant kinda related to this topic

FWIW: I happened to be in the area of my Academy last night so me and my grandson went in to look at (ar15s) guns. Going thru the front doors I must have passed at least no less than 10 employees, when we get to the gun "counter", the ar's are located to the far right end of the rifles and gun counter, the gun section register is a good 25-30 ft to the left all most to the extreme other end. We stand by the AR's and the one gun area clerk was at the opposite end by the register talking to another customer, so we wait, and wait, and wait and by now there must be no less than 10-12 customers standing at the gun counter. At one point he calls for a manager, I assume to help him out with all these customers, she walks up a does some paper work with him and then leaves.:eek4: 20 mins later after the clerk finished waiting on the next person to the left of us, who by the way came after we did but apparently the mind set is to wait on the closest customer first (!WTF!) he asked can I help you, by this point my blood pressure is going ballistic and I don't want to go on a rampage since my 5 yr old grandson is in my buggy. So I ask him what I wanted to know and I leave. Bottom line is; I could NEVER spend any real money on a gun there, these people are a joke! I could have and was prepared to buy but man who needs this hassle. I blame the manager as much as I do the 18yr old clerk but the amount of academy employees that walked by when we were standing there idol and never once asked if I needed help is astounding.:eek3: Good Luck to Red Jacket on selling their wears there but unless they give them away, none of my money will go thru them. YMMV, rant off!

This seems to be par for the course anywhere you have minimum wage help in Louisiana, especially around the Greater New Orleans area. One of the things that made it easy to ween myself off of fast-food. The non-existent customer service was enough to ruin my day. It's hard to spend money anywhere when the people who are supposed to be waiting on you have you waiting on them.

Not bitching, just stating the obvious that plenty others have noticed as well. I changed my shopping habits to accomidate where I choose to spend my money. Just curious though, what are you doing to "fix" this problem?

Two different Academys ran me off when I was wanting to make two different impulse buys.

I've got thousands of rounds through a couple of my ar's that do not have the castle nut staked I don't really think that will be an issue as long as they torqued it properly.

Both times i've gone into Academy and actually spent a good amount I was ignored the whole time I was looking through the gun case. The first time was with my gf (spent $279 on a little .380) the second time was with my dad ($300+ on a smith and wesson). Theres nothing like the service from a privately owned shop BUT I've never been to one that can match Academy's prices. Thats why I buy from cheaperthandirt now...

    I'm moving.
In the mean-time, I try to educate all my patients about healthy living (beyond what is required of me), etc. if they express an interest.
As to "fixing" the problem, what would you suggest? This state generates a TON of tax money, we are #10 in the Union for total state taxes per $1,000, and yet we have about the worst everything from life expectancy to schools to roads.
    http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/total_taxes/index.html

Money isn't the answer, and I'm doing all I can personally, so that's about that in my book. I'm just going to move and be done with it. Life is way too short to be so miserable. I learned that this week. One of my friends passed away of a sudden massive heart-attack while on his way to work. Him and his wife were never happy here, and I thought to myself about how horrible it must be to live out the last part of your life in a place that you woke up hating every morning. It really put things in perspective--if you're not happy--FIX IT!

aside from gas keys or user induced errors, what have you seen go wrong on a properly built ar mid-life cycle? The platform has been exceptionally reliable in the thousands of rounds my dad and I have put through it, but granted, it was only the square range. I have found the platform to be simple, and reliable.

Everything from FTF, FTE, FTF, to parts breakage.

AR's are GREAT target rifles. That's about it.

LOTS of issues in the class this weekend, even setting aside the 'I decided to shoot steel case when I should know it won't work in premadona rifles'... there were many 'oops'

Regarding the lack of staking the castle nut:

I -think- I remember someone making the clear decision not to do it for the benefit of the user. Not everyone wants a strictly basic plain MOE'd out AR15, but you gotta put something on there to give someone a complete rifle. It makes it a lot easier for the user to swap a buttstock out if we don't stake the castle nut. Something like a gas key is most certainly a non-question. Something like the buttstock however, can require accounting for some flexibility.

I think I remember having that conversation, but I might have just been bullshitting or guessing at it, myself. I'm sure boss man can confirm.

I don't care if it's staked, but it it's torqued, I prefer a little Lock-Tite on the threads (that's what I do with mine).
