I recently purchased a Gamo Swarm Whisper for eradicating varmints. Cannot say enough about this air rifle. It only requires a single pump, shoots a .22 caliber pellet (larger than the old standard .177) AND it has a 10 round magazine, so you avoid reloading between shots. You could literally hunt squirrels with this thing and leave your .22LR at home.

I ordered mine directly from gamousa.com. Cost was $179. It includes a scope (which I wasn't thrilled with) and a tin of pellets. I arrived within a few days. I've been very satisfied with the rifle and with GAMO in general.

I love the old RWS guns. Hard to beat the thump of that big spring piston. I bought one of the nicer Benjamin nitro piston rifles in .22 a few years ago and I’m still enjoying it. Extremely cheap to shoot and yes, takes tree rats out like a pro. They’re louder than a suppressed .22 bolt action and the range is not as long, but they’re formidable.

I think that in their price range the Gamos are pretty darn good. Diana and HW are higher quality piston guns but you will pay. I have a Diana 48 that is an absolute squirrel thumper. I also have a few pcp's and they are cool and in terms of pure performance they can be made more powerful than any piston gun. However, at around 21 ft/lb my Diana shoots clean through squirrels at 30 yards so you can take the "real airgun" talk with a grain of salt. You can read endless discussions on the airgun forums about spring piston vs. PCP...Yawn... its like 9mm vs 45. I recommend you go to Pyramydair or one of the other online vendors and check out H&N and JSB pellets. Air Arms and FX pellets also seem to be pretty much the same as JSB. H&N pellets come in various head sizes. JSB are superb and are of a softer alloy than most and tend to be very accurate. Gamo and Crosman and big box store ammo is subpar. Your Gamo air rifle should be a fine squirrel gun especially if you are accustomed to hunting with a rifle. Air guns are fun!
