Is Hodgdon BL-C2 a good .308 powder?

So why will it not work? Please offer us your first hand info of loading this particular powder in 308 and your first hand results.
Yeah, Varget and RL15 are staples for a .308 load but please explain why Ball-C(2) is not a choice for .308.
And 8208 is not a great power for heavier projectiles. I have never seen 8208 overperform a varget load in any match I have ever shot in .308

Do you use BL-c in your 308’s? I don’t know of anyone who uses it for 308…. I’ve had good luck with it in .223 tho. I don’t know of anyone using BL-C for 308…. Just my personal experience.
I’m sure it will work but definitely not the first powder I’d recommend.

I used the BL-C2 in my .308 years ago when I was bulk loading them on my Dillon 550. I used it mainly because it metered really well out of the powder measure. It kept my M1-A and my HK91 well fed. Can't recall the powder charge, and I was loading 150 grain FMJ because they were cheapest. There are plenty more powders now available for loading the .308.
I’ve heard it’s good for lighter stuff but I had no luck with it. Have had good luck with TAC, IMR-3031,IMR-4061, And Varget.
It's great for large volume runs because as someone stated, it meters well. Most of the surplus military powders in years past were BL-C2 or variants that were either production overruns, or pull down powders. Many years ago I used quite a bit of it and still wouldn't hesitate to use it for stuff like plinking ammo. Is there more accurate stuff out there now? Sure. There's also cleaner and leaner stuff too, but it's still very suitable for the 308/7.62. I'd even lay good money that most of the imported 7.62 ammo would have a version of it, or a copy of it loaded if you pulled one down.

I have shot a lot of powder in my 308’s over the years. This one in particular I have not tried. But I would consider if i had a bunch and needed ammo. Just because what you heard was best and what won’t work ain’t always best.
I will tell you a well known myth that Berger VLD’s don’t like to jump is ********.
I have jumped them .010 to .015 with fantastic results.
It’s ok to try something different.
Ive tried it but I was shooting heavies and BL-C leans more towards the 150ish and and being its ball powder it meters well in bulk applications in progressive presses.

I get your point. Pressure will come with 8208 you mentioned as a unicorn powder too.
The magic charge of powder for a 308 is around 43.3gr of varget depending on the chamber and bullet.
That aside, with the price and availability of powder people are trying new things.

Back when we made "mexican match" ammo from lake city match from the CMP, the powder in some lots was a ball powder. Asking around the military teams, the powder was blc-2, and the bullet was a 173 gr lake city match bullet which was replaced with a 168gr or 175 gr. BLC-s will shoot in 308, but downsides are it is temp sensitive, it gets overpressure real quick if your pushing it and is kinda dirty. But it does meter well and shoots well. Is there better powders for heavy match bullets that will give you more speed like varget and 4064? yes, but I wouldnt turn down a good deal on blc-2
FYI its the most accurate load in my 35 whelens for 200 gr bullets, 62 grains of blc2 and a hornady soft point

If that's all you have, or you're getting it dirt cheap, I'd shoot it. I have shot it in my M14's, actually have shot a lot of it. I've shot a lot of different powders out of Service Rifles because I shoot that discipline. I NEVER liked Var-gay (Varget) or RL15 which many other Service Rifle shooters love. All my BLC-2 was Pulled Surplus I used it for Short-line ammo (155gr Bullet at 200 and 300yds) I seem to remember running out of case capacity before reaching target speed with heavier bullets. After running out of BLC-2 I moved to TAC because it was cheap to shoot. If you're paying top dollar for BLC-2 there's probably better choices out there for 308.
