I am cleaning this old Krag I just picked up and the barrel will not come clean. I have ran about 20 patches through it with Bore Cleaner IOSSO and all the patches are Dark Black. Wonder if this is normal?

That is totally normal. You’ll probably have to put 10 times that many patches down along with a good brushing. I plugged the barrel or one end and put Kroil inside and let it sit for a couple days and then drained out the Kroil, then brushed again that seem to help a lot

The IOSSO is a rubbing compound. Switched to Hoppes then Break Free. Coming fairly clean.

Rifling is pretty worn. Was hoping it was lead or copper fouled. Next step is to see how it shoots. I have some rifles with worn barrels that still shoot decent.

I’ve got an Outer’s Foul Out that uses electrolysis to remove lead or copper from a barrel. They don’t make them anymore. But you could make one yourself and they work great for C&R rifles.

    I collect C&R rifles.

That looks interesting. I have a 1887 Marlin 38-40 that looks like Smooth Bore. I suspect Lead Fouling. That might work great.

I use it occasionally. But when it’s needed nothing else would work as well. An example of this is a 98k that was Russian capture. The darn thing wouldn’t shoot and had a spot in the middle of the barrel you could feel when running a patch through. (JB Bore paste, lots of pitting....needed polished too) I used the foul out and got a ring of copper out from the middle of the barrel that covered the electrode multiple times before it quit pulling copper out. The rifle shot to WW2 accuracy standards afterwards.

It’s a different solute for the lead. The formula to make the solutes is on line. The rest of it you could make yourself.
