31 Years ago yesterday some @ss shot an RPG at me from the back of a Utility vehicle.

I had never seen a Mk19 before, and was fascinated by the one the MP's chasing the Utility vehicle were shooting.
I stood there and stared, while the rest of my squad was hiding behind our 5 ton.
A Republican Guard in the back of the truck saw me and popped one off at me, or maybe he was shooting at my truck.
It skidded to a stop in the sand, about ten feet in front of my toes, without going off.
I put a mine flag on it, so no one would run it over, and moved on.
After that, every day since has been a gift.
I still want to shoot a Mk19. So cool.

    31 Years Ago Today:
I got to destroy an howitzer.
A diamond charge on the tube cut the barrel neatly in half.
A couple of bangalor torpedos in the breech, for good measure sent a HUGE breech block flying about 150 yards.
    Definitely an overcharge condition.

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of my first stroll in a minefield, getting shot at by a ZSU-23, and seeing an A-10 destroy said AA gun.

Good Times. I was younger then. Skinnier too.

What were you doing thirty one years ago?
Bet it wasn't as much fun as I was having.

Hanging out in the Gulf of Mexico on an offshore platform. Working the Oil & Gas industry corporate form of a work release program. Couple weeks captive on the platform then couple weeks onshore playing.

Woulda been about 11, so I was probably sitting in my mom’s living room in a wooden rocking chair watching this revolutionary concept called CNN coverage of the first (or second, depending on perspective) gulf war while eating a hungry man frozen dinner on a folding tray table. Might’ve been coverage of FROY conflict too. Back when the news wasn’t yet obviously slated political op-ed… just facts still, as far as my juvenile mind could tell.

Strangely I remember more vividly the Challenger explosion than Desert Storm, despite the fact I ended up spending over 2 years just in Iraq, but have never had the remotest aspirations to join nasa in any capacity.

But did you have 20-some hours of annual mandatory briefings on sexual harassment, equal opportunity, sensitivity, woke-ness, and govt travel card responsibility?
Oh hell no. I served before woke was a thing.

We chanted 'Kill a Commie for Mommy' in bayonet warfare training.

Ours was “Kill! Kill! Kill! Blood makes the grass grow!”
Was painted in five foot block letters on a wall at Benning near the firing range.
