If you live within Baton Rouge city limits who do you have to notify when you apply for a Type 03 FFL? Is it the chief of police or Sheriff?

In the city limits I think it is Chief BRPD, outside of the city limits I believe it would be the Sheriff.

Unless it varies parish to parish (kinda doubt it) and unless the Lafayette Parish dood lied to me, the Sheriffs handle all FFL applications.

Even C&R, the not-really-FFL, but still an FFL form, app.

Just went through this with the Lafayette PD and the Lafayette Sheriff. Police had no idea what I was talking about really, Sheriff's deputy that handled my call knew right away, and even who specifically took care of the stuff. He called me back and had a nice chat.

Allow me to hijack this thread and ask what may be a stupid question.

Why do we (nationwide) have so many different types of law enforcement. Why don't we just have a Sheriff and his deputies in each parish/county? If a city within the parish/county wants more police presence why don't they just get a sheriffs station with deputies that cover that predescribed area? I just don't get why Houma for example is covered by LSP, Houma PD and Terrebone Parish SO.

I guess I can see the point of LSP...sombody has to escort wideloads down the freeway.

    Just kidding.

I had this conversation Saturday night with a CPA friend of mine. There are two reasons why you will never see this money and autonomy. I work with LEO agencies all over the country. This has come up from time to time in some of my clients jurisdictions. It never gets past exploratory committees.

That would make too much sense and reduce expenses, it could never happen.

new iberia got rid of its city police and let the sheriff take over.

I know at least one small dept that the SO could take over. The SO or LSP has to handle most or their DWI's becuse they can't write them and answer calls because no one is out.
