the august tax free is state tax only (about 4%) and is more for school supplies

EDIT: That is for 2009. It's the same first weekend of September this year, 3rd-5th.

Legislature provides an exemption of state and local sales
and use taxes on consumer purchases of firearms,
ammunition and hunting supplies. This sales tax holiday will
occur each calendar year on the first consecutive Friday
through Sunday of September. The Annual Louisiana Second
Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01
a.m. on that Friday and ends at 12 midnight on the following
Sunday. During this weekend the sales and use tax levied by
the state and its political subdivisions shall not apply to the
sales price or cost price of any consumer purchases of
firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies.

Why didn't they do this the weekend PRIOR to Labor Day? Lots of people will be dove hunting that weekend- and unless something's changed, teal hunting, too.

Not to mention, this is also the start of football season. In our neck of the woods, football season and hunting usually go hand-in hand.....

Just out of curiosity I checked to see if there will be any gun shows that weekend. The only one I find is in Lake Charles.
