I prefer the solid receiver and side ejection of the 336. Can't go wrong with either though.

IMO, if you're looking to put optics on it, the 336 is better than the 94. No optics, I'd go with the 94. Again, that is just my personal opinion.

I shoot both the Marlin 336 and the Winchester 94 for deer and hogs. I mounted the Williams Foolproof peep sights (a significant improvement on the stock sight) on one of my 94s and my 336 (yes, you can fit a peep sight on a top eject 94). That's about all I need for the shots I usually take on deer. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

But, be careful, lever actions are addictive.
