It is moonshine. The guy you see with the jar, his cowboy name is Whiskey Trader.

The first two and the last one are from EOT 2005. The two in the middle with the moonshine are at the Hangin at Coyote Creek in 2004 or 2005. The Hangin is the annual match of the Bayou Bounty Hunters. Their range is located in Amite LA.

Cool. I met several of the Cajun Cowboys working on the annual NRA Banquet. I have a Vaquero & Stetson but never made it to a competition.

You should show up at a Cajun Cowboys match, it's the second sunday of every month at the Ascension parish sheriffs range in Gonzales. If you show up with a varquero and stetson they'll have you shooting and everyone will fall all over each other to lend you their guns so you can shoot the match.

I like shooting stuff as much as the next guy... but I can barely afford ammo, much less a stylish (for 1885) costume too

The guy's that arn't too sure about the clothes and the names are usually the ones who take costumes and names to extreme once they do get over it and go to a few big matches. To shoot matches you don't need the elaborate clothes just the basics. Most of the photos I posted are from the night events at big matches. At big matches they have costume balls, casino nights, cowboy music concerts and banquets. You will not see all the fancy clothes during the day or at local monthly matches. People will dress at local matches, just not to extreme especially during the summer.

Besides around gun people the would you rather have the name Whiskey Trader or Micheal Moore. The fellow with the moonshine jar, bless his heart his real name is Micheal Moore, he's a retired policeman, and currently is supplementing his income doing gunsmithing. At one time he was quite the IPSC shooter.

So are the shooting matches before or after the moonshine consumption?

Many hours before. At most big cowboy matches they have a big fancy dress party/banquet/ball the evening after the final day of shooting the main match. It gives you time to socialize, relax and have some fun before traveling home after the awards are given out the following day. Plus it keeps the wives interested in coming along to matches.
