.308 here, 'cause I only want to reload two rifle calibers (other is .223) and my DPMS .308 with a red dot is the ticket for chasing pigs. Last one was a one shot kill, DRT, on a running hog at estimated 50 yards. No confidence in .223 for this sort of hunting scenario.

I like the 300 blk with a 110gr Sp. To keep the round on target at 200 yd get the burris eliminator 3 or 4 Scope it will keep it on target.

Question for the BayouShooter AR afficianodos: I'm an old geezer with NO experience in those other calibers using the AR platform, but a younger friend tells me his heart is set on getting himself an AR in the .50 Beowulf caliber. Good choice, or a bad choice? Should he change his mind?
    .308 Win., hands down.
Brass is easy to get, factory ammo is easy to get.
.308" caliber bullets offer more options than any other caliber (caliber is bullet diameter, NOT the name a cartridge) by far.
TTSX in 110 gr. FB and 130 gr. BT are all you need in a lead-free hunting bullet. Keep it light and fast. You don't need all that bullet weight.

While I'm at it, get foot-pounds of energy out of the equation and keep it out. A 150 grain TTSX carries the same number of foot-pounds as a 150 grain FMJ at the same velocity. Discard all thinking involving foot-pounds.

The .308 Winchester is the only answer. No contest.

I love 308 one of my favorites, BUT the only draw back is huge in that in fits in an AR-10 not 15.

Now, what is helping is the POF and Ruger guns which are still a little unproven.

Caliber-wise it's king, but hard to pick over in 6.5 grendel in the smaller 15 platform.

If you don't mind going AR-10, you can also try 338 Federal or the Q Boom Box in 8.6 elk

I used the 300 BO for a couple of years with good success. No shots were over 100 yards. The last 3 or 4 years I have been using the 7.62x39 with great results. Last few deer I've shot dropped in their tracks. The x39 is really not an "AR" round but effective.

I have had 6.8 SPC in a past. It has done well, it’s more suited if you wanted to reach out to two or 300 yards, also had a 762x39 10.5” sbr which did well also under 100 yards suppressed, never had an issue, but never cared for the magazines, even though I’ve never had an issue with them… this year. I have a 300 blackout upper for my sbr’s going to give it a shot 7.62x39 and .300 should have the same ballistics of a 3030, which is more than capable within 100 yards

I have also had 2 diff ar-10 in .308 the newer smaller g2 style… they were just way to heavy and big for my needs loaded out with a scope they were close to 10-12lbs… and very rarely have I had to have a follow up shot unless a big group of hogs, I hunt mostly swamp so 100yrds is about max… that’s why I stick with 9”-11.5” sbr and a suppressor shooting supers… my oal with suppressor is shorter than a 16” ar15 or ar10, much quieter and still have the ballistics to kill any thing on Louisiana under 150yrds…

.300 aac (havent even shot it yet) lol better get going (now wears a vortex viper 1-6)

I'd like an AR-05 chambered in .30-06 SPRG.

(This was just a joke, for anyone scratching their head. I love a Long Action.)

I am wanting to put an AR 15 together that will double as a hunting rifle it will be used Deer size game and shooting 200 yards or less. What caliber would you recommend I know an AR 10 would be better but with the 15 platform I will be able to change the upper and shoot other calibers. Thanks in Advance
My cousin uses a 223 build with custom rounds and it does the trick.
