Are there nice primitive camping spots near the New Orleans metro area that you would recommend? Somewhere I can take the family for a weekend?

Flint creek has primitive that’s away from rvs and some hiking trails and a beach area . And I second Percy Quin .
Bougechitto state park has primitive but haven’t stayed there it’s pretty far from the rvs

Bayou Segnette State park in Westwego was nice, but I just stayed there for the gun shows. Don't know about any attractions in the park other than boat ramps for fishing the canals and Lake Cataouatche. Browse for their website.

And clear springs campground has a cool primitive area hiking and mountain bike trails
    Second for clear springs campground.

Clarkco state park in quitman Mississippi would be another recommendation.

chicot state park isn’t bad but it’s a haul to get out there

The state parks on the north shore give me the rv park vibe and I don’t really enjoy them anymore but fountainblue isn’t bad if you’re looking for something close and easy. Sites hold water so don’t go if it’s has rained hard. They take about a week to try out.

I’m hitting Blakey state park outside of mobile for Easter and I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s got to offer. That might be a long drive for a weekend though.

We make a trip at least once a month within 3 hours-ish of covington so if you need help with let me know. We’re tent campers so no experience with the rv parks.

If you’re into backpacking, google “Louisiana hikes”. He’s got some good videos on in state trails.
