Could go with the IRC route, set up a room on a big public server and there's plenty of java IRC clients that can be put on a page here for those without clients.

I looked for a bit and didn't find anything that would fit in good with vbulletin. Quas' solution works, sort of.

I fear adding something as taxing to the site might have performance issue ramifications. I'll keep an eye out
