Question for others who may be more knowledgable. I went to puchase a .270 win hunting rifle at academy and was delayed. Ive made plenty of purchases in the past and never been delayed before. The entire experience was a bit off. I knew ahead of time the exact rifle i wanted. The lady at the counter asked me about 6 times if i was sure i wanted to purchase the rifle. Was a bit annoying as i knew exactly what i wanted and wouldnt have told her i want that rifle had i not wanted it. On to the paperwork, filled it out and she went and did her thing and came back and said i was delayed and handed me a little form for how to appeal it. I went to the website listed on the form and reviewed the possible reasons and am certain none of the legal issues apply to me. Considering all of that is this something that just happens randomly? Or should i be concerned and further investigate it? I know my background is clear i hold a twic card, i legally own a suppressor and until recently letting it go held a merchant mariners document. I will also be going to lsp friday to submit my paperwork for a chp.

Possibly someone with the same name but different SS number. Did you include your SS on the 4473? If this continues with other firearms purchases you can get a PIN number that is unique to you.

No i didnt, honestly dont trust academy employees with my ss number. I normally dont purchase from academy but they were more than $50 lower on their price for the particular rifle. If i opt to just not worry about this at academy and go purchase elsewhere whats the chances that will cause issues in the system? Assuming i dont get delayed again that is...

May never occur again. I have been purchasing firearms for more than 50 years and the Alphabet Agencies have my SS number so I just include it on the 4473.

    Delayed or Denied?

If delayed, no big deal. It's happened to me a lot. Now with a CHP, I don't have that problem.

Technically after 3 business days they can release the firearm to you. Most big box stores won't release until the receive a go ahead call back.

    Oh, and screw Academy.

X2. Academy, the place where it takes you 2 hours to buy a gun, but you saved $20. Granted, I haven't tried purchasing a gun from them since the CHP change because their administrative BS is more than I can take. Let's take something simple, and complicate the ever living hell out of it!

Academy does that crap on purpose in order to get you to buy more crap....

I start telling them to hurry up, Their slower than my Grandmaw and she's been dead since 86'

I tell them they don't know what their doing, Go get me a lounge chair etc, etc

In other words I become a pain in the ass to them, I've also told other customers that I've been waiting 30 minutes and they should go else ware....In front of the gun counter boys and girls!

Better believe they speed up when I get on their azz.....and I have a CHP.

I bought a Sub2k from them (only place that actually had one in stock) with my CHP and it was a painless process. Well, once someone that knew what to do stepped in.

Academy will not sell u a firearm with a delay.

That's what I figured. Not many big chains will.

If you were delayed because your name is the same as someone with a checkered past, applying at another FFL without providing your SSN should have the same result - delayed again.

Similar for me I bought 2 guns with delays. Both were about a 45 minute delay. Next time I accounted for it but I had no delay - at an Academy.

1 delay was at a gun store. My dad bought the exact same gun at the same time - no delay.
1 delay was at a NRA banquet. My dad had no delay and I did.

I get delayed EVERY time, and I have a USSS clearance. My brother is a convicted felon, but our names are totally different, so who knows? I haven't purchased since I received my CHP. And other posters are correct that the big box stores will not release the firearm until they get an OK, regardless of how long it takes.

People who get delayed on occasion should file with the VAF. Pretty simple procedure but takes awhile. I waited 5 months but have never had an issue since. They have to give u a reason or they give u a pin # to put on your app. and as long as u don't mess up u should not have any more issues.

Yes...this happened to me when I first moved into Louisiana. There was/is a Mississippi ne'er do well with a similar name. I still get delayed today but only for a few minutes to confirm my driver's license number.

I've never been delayed or denied. I've bought from Academy once and Wally-world once. Neither will get my money again. It leaves a lousy taste in my mouth when I buy something and you escort me out the building like I'm a shoplifter. I normally patronize the local shops its a better experience.

I used to get delayed once in a while. In November I bought a gun with no problems and since then the previous 6 times I have been delayed anywhere from 1 to the full amount of days. Of course I can always get it but for whatever reason it just takes longer.

I will be glad once my concealed permit comes in so I can be done with that mess.

I agree, it's much nicer to buy from a local FFL dealer. You don't have to take the attitude from min wage employee who doesn't really want to be there, and the prices aren't that much of a savings I find. You might save $10 on a $500 gun...is the hassle and poor service worth that much savings? I like to build a relationship with my local small store FFL, it's just nice to walk in there once and awhile and shoot the bull. If you can find someone like that, they will tend to look out for you, go the extra mile when you have a question or need something. That is easily worth $10 extra, IMO.
