As you know the .44 mag is too much for these old hands,so what other calibers do you have.
    I have .22lr,.22 tcm,.32 swl,.32 hr mag ,.32-20, 38 special.41 mag,44 special,.44 mag,.45 colt,45 acp,9mm.
Im going to drop down and start using the .32 hr mag and the .45 acp and put back the .44 mag for the grandkids

You guys have guns. I lost all mine when I was fishing.
Hey someone was gonna say it.
I'm going fishing with mine this weekend. Hopefully the boat stays afloat. (Fingers crossed)

The caliber is only 1/2 the answer, it also depends on the weight (actually mass) of the handgun to absorb some of the recoil. .38spl in a titanium snubbie is a lot different handling than .38spl in a 4" S&W M10 or M686, same as a Kahr CW9 or Ruger LC9 vs a 92FS

Oldman11 I think the 38spl would be a soft shooter.
    3fifty7, is that S&W 500 a soft shooter?
It’s a 8 3/8” barrel so it’s pretty hefty, a lot more of a straight back push than a flipping up recoil. I’ll shoot it single hand, strong or weak. Few like it, most hate it honestly.

I am big fan of the Russian Nagant gas seal revolver. While the commercial 7.62x38R ammo is generally not loaded as hot as the original (250ft/lbs with a 97 grain bullet exiting the muzzle around 1100ft/s) it is still viable in CQB scenarios. As mentioned previously I have no experience in CQB scenarios, but I generally defer to the colective wisdom that bullet placement is the most important factor in successfully defending ones life. My main reason is that the double action trigger pull is higher than average (approx 72 lbs) thus making this a safe gun to leave around toddlers, women, most men, anyone without hands, and pretty much any person or animal that does not have some sort of prybar or other leverage device. No need for a holster, or any sort of trigger covering at all. Plus, once displayed, the peels of laughter from ones adversary will give the bearer of the M1895 a distinct advantage and precious time, neither of wich is generally available with more "serious looking" sidearms.

I find even +P in a 4" K frame to be not very much more than 22lr.
