Not really. At one time there was 5 or 6 of building, a few build party's. Today with kits $400, barrel $120 and recievers $120. Not really worth it.

It's not like building an AR. Almost every part has to be fitted. Unless you know someone with the tools not worth spending $500 to $600 on tools. Most of the time one cannot be completed in 1 day.

My coworker has some tools I could borrow since he's pretty invested into AK47's and AK74's with his collection. I've always wanted a fun unconventional build. Was just always back and forth between a 300 BLK or AK-47 pistol build, but after shooting his AK, I'm hooked with the AK bug! Sucks that I waited out too long now it seems and missed the window of opportunity for getting the most bang for my buck for building. Been eyeing the Meridian Defense or Rifle Dynamics pistols, but man the wait times are slightly brutal. The cost as well, but I guess I gotta pay to play if I really want it. :dunno:

I have often wondered why it cost so much to build and AK. They are cheaper to buy premade. The exact opposite is true with AR15s. Can build and AR for under $400 with ease. AK47 you are lucky to come in under $1000.

IMO, it's worth it to build your own if you have the tools/supplies. It's an experience and it's not really an easy one. You have to do a fair amount of fine work, considering you're making a gun with such loose tolerances. It's not cheap anymore, and as mentioned the tools are easily as expensive as the parts.

That said, if you plan to purchase....
I helped Jim teach a LE class and basically ran his entire line of AKs and variants in Full Auto and Semi (10+yrs ago), and you'd have a hard time finding a finer AK anywhere. You will not regret a Rifle Dynamics rifle, absolutely combat/defense/food quality rifles. They are no nonsense and reliable. We put thousands and thousands of rounds through every gun, belt-feds to magazines, and there was never a hiccup unless it was operator error. 100% recommend RD.

Every once in a while, we get a customer with an AK build needing markings. They are definitely cool to see in the raw and being built.

Do you do factory style markings for ak builds? For example -
