So recently, I was laid off. I've always wanted to be an instructor, but I never found the time, and now I have an abundance. Is anyone willing to take on a padawan and show me the ways of the force? I am interested in assisting in classes and doing some learning. I live on the Westbank of NOLA and was just wondering if this was a good way of going about getting into it. Any info from instructors here would be greatly appreciated!

I'd recommend starting with some basic instructor training. That'll help you get your feet wet in the right direction, plus you'll have some credentials to your name.

If it were me, I'd start with the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course (or rifle, whatever you're into) with Bill Long at Gulf Coast Shooters. He's kindof the "godfather" around these parts for instructor training. It's a very high-quality class, and you'll also be introduced to a huge network of local instructors to work with and apprentice under.
