    The receiver and butt plate are stamped with U.S. 1863, and the ramrod is consistent with a Springfield 1863 rifled musket.

    But the extractor, block and bore (.442) are consistent with a late model .43 Spanish No. 1 rolling block.

    From what I've read, the USA had a million or so muzzle loading rifles left over from the War of Northern Aggression. Springfield Armory ( or maybe Remington ) may have used some of these to test out different configurations of new versions of their Rolling Blocks.
