    LUBRICATION & RUST PROTECTION
Most all of us have our favorite products for lube and protection of the few guns we haven't lost yet in boating excursions. Opinions developed over years of using tried and true products -Hoppes No.9- and experimenting with new "WOW" break-through formulations that tout miraculous results with minimal efforts. Most of the NEW experiments fall far short of the heralded performance - and lead to conclusions like- " what used to work still works..." (unless they change the formulation -i.e. Coca-Cola), "some of the NEW stuff works for SOME purposes..." and "NOTHING works for EVERYTHING...".

While searching for an alternative lube for Pelgun Oil for airguns, on >smith-wessonforun.com<, I happened upon a post referencing
"Lubrication 101: Gun oil, snake oil and how to tell the difference".

    https://www.grantcunningham.com/2006/05/lubrication-101/

The article's analysis tweaked my interest enough to prompt me to order some of the LUBRIPLATE products. Does anyone have any experience with these lubes? After receiving my shipment, and trying the product, I'll post on my observations. Obviously, the testing will be minimal - due to the current Biden-hole induced hoarding and price gouging ammo shortage. Just like toilet paper - when you need it you gotta have it.

I read that article years ago. I recall it was well written and thoughtful. It also a lot of great points.

I’ve been using Ballistol for several years and it works pretty well.

If you read the safety data sheet on a lot of expensive products and then on common inexpensive products like break cleaner , electronic parts cleaner synthetic oil and ATF you will start going to the auto parts store for gun cleaner and lub.

While I indirectly worked with chemicals, I wouldn't trust SDS sheets cause they give a "range" While they all might have similar properties, some of the chemicals having too much or too little won't work as good. Now I am not saying the cheap stuff is garbage, or the expensive stuff is golden, cause I have seen clapped out hondas with 500k miles still running, and 90k GM vehicles on lifts having major repairs.

Years ago, I stopped buying expensive cleaners like Bore Scubber and started using non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner at about 1/4 the price. Also. I plan to try the synthetic motor oil/synthetic auto grease mix shown in the youtube video link posted by freedive10's reply to "WD 40 Specialist Dry Lube PTFE" - altho I have a hard time believing the extreme amount of the stuff he instructs glopping on an AR. I've used Castrol Full Synthetic motor oil in my vehicles for many years.

Most comprehensive test I have read so far. It's kind of old but stands the test of time pretty well.

Many thanks for the link to "dayattherange". That dude really poured major time and cash into this really impressive evaluation. You are 100% correct. This IS the most comprehensive testing I have ever seen - he covered aspects of the products that I don't recall having seen anywhere. Odor? Big issue for me. My wife HATES the smell of Hoppe's No. 9 -she claims it hangs around for 2-3 days. I can only use it outside in my workshop and make sure the piece I used it on is odorless before bringing in to store it.

He did test the lubricity of the products it is about the middle of the page where he used the sled to test metal on metal friction which would simulate the workings of a firearm.

And in that test it seems that Frog Lube did well, yet Frog Lube consistently has issues in various firearms. It’s a good data set, but it’s not showing all the variables which can affect the firearm and lubricant.

True I have heard there are issues with Frog lube and cold weather also. I have used it on a couple of guns and I put a very light coating and then wipe it off not sure how it would gum up that way but I don't fire those rifles as much. I have also used Weapon Shield and it seems to work okay no real lubrication issues and no rust. I do know that I will be keeping a close eye on the frog lube guns.

I pointed out the article as it takes some very popular lubes and puts them through some pretty comprehensive tests with pretty good testing scenarios including the use of a control group. It may not be the be-all end-all test but there is good information there for those that look.

It's a good data set. Rem Oil isn't nearly as amazing as some people think. There are plenty lubricants and protective coatings out there that do not work very well.

I use Slip 2k and Slip 2k EWL. Why? Because I have a lot of it. Not much of any other reason. It has to be reapplied often like most lubricants.

I have the FMO 350 AW spray, the SFL-0 grease, and some Clear Plex grease they sent me; of these products, the FMO350AW is my favorite. I've used Slip200 EWL, Gun Lube, and EWL-30, still have some, and the FMO350 is great. I think they told me it's a 20wt oil. The grease is white, looks like Lithium grease, and seems great as well.
They're products seem to be first class, but that's just an impression/opinion.

There is a company in Harvey, Motion Industries, on the West side of the tunnel, that's where I bought the FMO350 oil, and I assume they can get any of the Lubriplate products.
