Please make sure that someone - a relative, a close friend - either has a copy of, or knows the location of, your service records, just in case you pass away.

Some of you may remember that I posted about my brother's suicide 3 years ago. We searched for, but could not find, his records. We were hoping to get his burial costs or headstone paid for but didn't know if his service qualified him for it, since he had been medically discharged after a training injury. We immediately wrote to all of the Military Records bureaus.

This was 3 years ago. I just received the records this week.

    Nothing like a prompt response.

That's a good idea. I think I have a task for this weekend.

And don't forget to take it with you when you get your Louisiana Driver's license renewed as "veteran" can be added to it.

You can also get a VA ID card off the VA site. No need to carry around any copies of your DD214. If you do carry your DD214, though, make sure you redact your SSN.
