Mossberg Shockwave 590 Test Run

Took newly acquired 12 gauge Shockwave to range at Bedico today for first experience shooting it. Primary purpose was to assess some reviews of how difficult it was to shoot or how severe the recoil it has. Started out with Federal mini shells and perfectly manageable and accurate as any shotgun at 10-15 yards. Switched to full size 00 buckshot and perfectly manageable. I’m not a big guy 5:9/185lbs and no problem controlling it. I’m now inclined to not even bother with the mini shells, even though they have somewhat less recoil. I bought this primarily out of curiosity but I think this is a very useful close quarters weapon for home defense as opposed to fully stocked shotgun.

I did not find mine pleasant to shoot so I put a stock on mine. My only complaint about mine is it requires a 6 oclock hold with the bead sight.

I can appreciate the benefit of the stock but the appeal of the Shockwave is the short length.

I have one that came with the pistol brace, before all the craziness. With the brace applied, I did not see the major difference between the Shockwave and a stocked shotgun. I agree that the appeal is the length. I removed the brace, put the raptor grip on and understand the limitations as such. I agree that the Shockwave is perfectly manageable with full power flite control buckshot.

I have a tac 14 and I've learned it's a great gun for those with experience and an open mind, not so much for new shooters. I'm in the process of building it out to try Rhett Neumayer's shooting concept on it. I'll post pics when I'm finished. But as it stands, just using the push/pull method has worked fine up to 25 yards

I have a tac 14 and it took a little trigger time to master it. but I finally got the tax stamp and now own a really sweet sbs.

Just be careful with the stock birdshead if your hands get sweaty. I think it would be better with some cloth sports tape and maybe a retention strap. I find the angle of the birdshead to be more comfortable than a pistol grip.

Took me forever but here are some sub par pics of my new to me Shockwave and the old Tac 14. Shockwave is set up to shoot mini and standard shells. Defender Tactical adapter, strap, sights and grip sleeve.

Tac 14 is my Neumayer setup. Fastfire III, Demonstrated Concepts recoil strap, Nordic Components extension and a hand stop on the side rail. The hand stop really helps push that muzzle and control recoil. Rhett is really on to something with his cheek shooting method.

For me the main attraction of these guns is not having to beat up my bad shoulder. I've preferred a shotgun for HD for decades but a shitty rotator cuff made them unpleasant to train with. These little guys have been a game changer for me personally and allowed me to go back to using a platform I have tons of time behind

I bought and installed a Pachmyer rubber sleeve for the grip and it improved grip retention and comfort when firing.

I went take a self defense class with mine in early July with an instructor on here. I learned a lot. My cheap shotgun velcro cards didn't work nor did the cheap buckshot. I also need to continue practicing. It's amazing what a good stance and proper recoil control can accomplish.

As for the shotgun itself, it did perfectly fine.

I recently put the Streamlight TL Racker on my Shockwave. Dunno if you guys have tried it yet, but I did not have a good experience. Beat the absolute hell out of my left index finger against the light housing. Even with mini shells. It's wide enough it doesn't really allow me good purchase on the gun so my hand repeatedly hammers into the hand stop/light housing when I'm able to retain grip on the forend at all. This was a huge surprise and letdown because I'm very competent with this particular platform.
