Remington Mdl 7 is a smaller version. Shoots well in 7mm-08 or .243 at that range

Two great choices. I have a .243 and a 7-08 for the kids but I’ll tell you, of the 9 or 10 deer they killed with the .243, only one didn’t drop where it stood when shot. I’m thoroughly impressed with that round

I have a 7-08 and I love it. Perfect for under 200 yards.

Nothing wrong with the old 30/30s smaller sized is a plus for a person to carry.
But another whole type than bolt guns. May be a larger learning curve to pick up on the lever gun over the bolt for follow up shots if need be.
    Depends on the shooter.

Y'all got an AR? .300BLK is great for deer in that range, just zero it at about 110-125yds. Low recoil, fun, cheap, tons of load options, relatively quiet (best suppressed caliber out there) and only need 9.5" barrel for full powder burn so you can go pistol or rifle.

    Just an idea.

I love the 7mm-08, that said, my wife shoots a 6.5 cm and loves it. We just picked her up a CVA single shot in 350 legend (very little recoil) for primitive season.... something else to think about.

Another option is a .300 Win Mag. Great knock down power there. Oh, and it'll work on a deer too :mamoru:

I have a 300blk with 16 inch barrel that I am using this year. Bought 125gr Makers loaded by Just Cause Solutions LLC out of Youngsville. He also loads 110gr Barnes and for Subs the 200gr Makers.

The Ruger American 308 package with the Vortex 3x9 is hard to beat for $650. I’ve shot a few of them to get them sighted in for customers. If I was looking for a hunting rifle , you’d have to convince me not to get one.

I saw a decent scoped Remington in .308 on here a few days ago really cheap. Solid choice all things considered. Like ammo availability, turn key condition… just saying.

My wife and oldest 2 daughters (13&11) hunt with a 6.5 cm. Great round, low recoil and they love it.

    Good points.

My usual answer to a question like this would be 7-08, however, ammo has been scarce here lately for it.

I'm in a similar situation right now. i have a 6.5 grendel upper that i had for my daughters when they were younger. my oldest moved up to a compact 7mm-08 2 years ago and has been very successful with that. i'm currently in the market for another similar rifle for my youngest daughter who is now ready to move into a bolt action. similarly i limit their shots to 100 yards or so. based on the performance i would like to get another 7mm-08 but may have to go with a 6.5 creedmore. of the budget friendly rifles in my opinion the savage axis 2 compact seems to be the best bang for the buck. i've looked at the mossberg patriot, ruger american, and the remington 700. the remington is the most expensive and and is a decent enough rifle but i haven't found one in stock anywhere local in the 2 calibers listed. the ruger while seems decent i can't get past the cheap stock. they all have very basic sythetic stocks but the ruger is just so flimsy if you squeeze it tight on the forarm area it touches the barrel and from the research iv'e done, found people experience accuracy issues due to this. the savage has a pretty stiff stock on it, it comes with the accutrigger and in my experiance savage normally puts out a fairly accurate rifle for a production rifle.

The Rugers also have a version of the accutrigger. And their accuracy has really impressed me. Hornady American Whitetail has been giving sub-moa groups.

I was looking at a 308 or a 30-06 for my gf for this season coming up…I threw her on a 45/70 when we hunted last year but gonna get her a nice BA this year so 308 has my vote and maybe a 30-06
