Palo Alto in Donaldsonville has the finest 600 yard line of any range around. It is covered with a wide roof and has surface used on playgrounds.

There are electronic targets on all firing points.
It is a great place to shoot, I got my first leg points there.

High Power competition is a great way to test your marksmanship skills. You shoot offhand with no sling at 200 yards, rapid fire sitting at 200 yards, rapid fire prone at 300 yards, and slow fire prone at 600 yards.
Equipment can be as simple as on AR-15 with a 4 1/2 pound trigger and up to a 4 1/2 power scope, a web or leather sling, a shooting jacket, and glove are needed to be competitive.

If you have any general questions about shooting high power post it here or feel free to send me PM.

    John,

There are no clinics scheduled at either Palo Alto or Gonzales that I know of at this time. Hopefully we have one soon if there is some interest.

The match in Gonzales is shot at 200 yards only using reduced size targets and is a good way to start. There are plenty of people willing to help if you are interested. We shoot on the fourth Sunday of most months at the Sheriff's range near Lamar Dixon.

Same holds true for the Palo Alto match in terms of people willing to help. You shoot that one at 200, 300, and 600 yards. A little more daunting for the first time out, but very doable.

If you are interested send me a PM and we can talk, we are always looking for new shooters.

Palo Alto Rifle & Pistol Club has several 600 yd rifle programs.

First Saturday of each month is the F-Class/Mid-Range Prone Match. This is a 60-shot NRA approved match with three strings of twenty shots plus sighting shots all at 600 yd. This match is for F-Open, F-TR, NRA Match, and service rifles.

Second Saturday of each month is the NRA Highpower Rifle Match. This is an 80-shot match fired at 200, 300, and 600 yd. with the service rifle or match rifle.

Third Saturday of each month is the Field Precision Rifle Match. This is a 60-shot unapproved match fired at 600 yd. that is similar the the F-Class match. Shooters with other types of rifles are welcome to shoot out of competition.

Thanks Mike. I used to shoot the 200 yard Gonzales matches back in the 80's. Hopefully, as soon as I get finished with this Hurricane Ida stuff, I can stick my toe back in.
