The Remington 721 and 722 series of rifles were introduced in 1948 after Remington designers wanted to put something new on the market. Most sporting rifles at the time were little more than WW1 era rifles adapted to hunting use.The differance between them was the 721 was chambered in long action or standard calibers (.270,30-06 etc) while the 722 was chambered in short action (.308).Technically the same as the 700 series which followed later on,it gained a reputation for being very accurate and reliable, especially for a rifle which originally sold for under 100 dollars. Its only drawback at the time was the somewhat plain stock and stamped trigger guard with the Winchester M70 eventually winning the beauty contest. As a result,it was discontinued in 1961 and the 700's hit the market the following year.
A word of caution here though...Remington bolt action rifles manufactured before 1982 were recalled due to the potential for an accidental discharge when the safety is released.I would strongly recommend you have that rifle checked by a gunsmith before using it.There was over 100 accidents that were attributed to this problem resulting in injury and death.

    Brusly
Yes however that recall only applied to Model 700's and not model 788's, 721's, 722's. The trigger on the 700 was redesigned from the 700. Many people complained that the 722/721 triggers were to sloppy, even with adjustment. I would have to agree as the triggers on both my 722's are pretty sloppy, and couldnt be fixed with adjusment, they work fine for a while, the loosen up again. Never had an AD with them though.

Most aftermarket 700 triggers will fit the 721/722 series, or can be moded to fit. The biggest issued is getting the saftey lefer to fit in the cutout without having to hog out the stock.
