Many of you on here are in public service, and other jobs that require a whole lot of sitting around and doing nothing. 12 and 16 hour shifts get pretty long, and company policy for my work requires me not to sleep. What do you guys do to burn time, aside from movies? I have at my disposal an iPhone 3GS, and Gateway netbook. I really want to find a decent time consuming game available for direct download online, but I can't really find any that my 10" netbook would be capable of running.

umm, read, work on a degree or some kind of certification. Many people wish they had endless hours with nothing to do....

Yea, its summertime so there's really not much I can do in that department. When school fires back up mid August I'll be utilizing my time studying and whatnot. If I had access to internet on my netbook, I'd do some reading but I don't.

edit: got SimCity for the iPhone. I remember that game being addicting, and it looks like a direct port of SimCity 3000.

Pick up a detachable cd rom. You could run most last generation games- c&c generals, ghost recon, neverwinter nights, etc. Look at the bargain bin...

I think this is my all time favorite C&C game. I started out hating it but still to this day me and my best friend still fire it up quite often and play a few maps.

You can always go to addictinggames.com if you have internet. You can play chess against yourself. Or you can get read books, that is what I did last semester in the classes I usually slept through.

    WTF?

Go to Bridgehouse and pick up a couple books for $0.50-$1.00 a piece.. Lack of Internet is no excuse to avoid the written word... would you believe that people were reading before the Internet came to life??

*Gasp* Surely you jest, sir? Nah, I'm kidding. The printed page can be quite an entertaining activity, given the right book.

You mean people actually still read books?

Just kidding, my daughter reads a lot. I am not a reader myself.

You hit it on the head, nola. I'd love to have the time to pursue a Kinesiology degree. To Hades with gaming.

Back when I had jobs with lots of down time I read books (Dale Brown, Tom Clancy, Steven King, Dean Koontz) or took online courses. For instance, the FEMA Independent Study courses. You can find them at- http://training.fema.gov/IS/crslist.asp . Over the years I've taken over 40 of these free FEMA IS courses.
Back when I first started taking them They weren't on the internet. They had you sign up for a course and they sent the books, study guides and even VHS tapes in the mail. You took the test then mailed it in and in a couple of weeks received a certificate in the mail.
Later they moved to doing the courses online and once completed sould send a certificate in the mail.
Now the course is entirely online and they don't even send you a paper copy of the completion certificate. You get a PDF of a certificate and then you get to print it out yourself.
Find some college lectures or similar videos online and download them. My Lady, Tena, found hours of video lectures she downloaded on subjects ranging from Geography to Physics. There's more the internet then porn and Youtube videos of cats playing the piano.

If you wanna work for Acadian start working on your NIMS certs. Boring as all hell but you'll have to do it one day anyhow.

EBREMS wanted it too when I worked for them back in 2006. I already had it well before then for my ham radio group. ICS/NIMS is required for ham radio volunteers who are with RACES, ARES, ARC, REACT and most other emcomm groups.
