Any of you guys ever had any experience with one of the above. Supposedly it solves the issue of "back feeding". Hooks up to breaker box; when lights go out you flip transfer switch to generator and turn on gen. Supplies power to 6 circuits. I am an attorney so dont know squat about electricity but Lowes claims these items are DIY projects/

It's not a DIY project for most people.
Have the Lowe's guy come over and help you. When he gets killed, hire a pro

Check into an interlock kit, too. A whole lot cheaper and simpler than a transfer switch and covers most needs. Still have a pro install it though.

It's something only for a licensed electrician to install. Granted, if you are an electrician but don't have a license, feel free to do it yourself. There is a lot of code that has to be met for a transfer switch install and depending on what you want to do, even needs the power company to unplug the meter for a few hours.

It keeps power connected from the pole to your house during good weather or power is not out. When power goes out (mine takes 15 seconds) the transfer switch reverses and puts the generator (I have a whole-house system) into your circuit and blocks electricity from back-feeding to the pole. This is an important safety for Entergy workers so they don't get zapped by your generated power when they are working on the lines.

When power is restored the transfer switch then transfers power (hence the name) back to your house and shuts out the generator which then shuts off. It is DEFINITELY NOT a DIY job!!!

Cost will depend completely on how you want it done. If you want the entire house in genny, it'll cost less than separating out circuits and equipment. But that usually translates to higher generator cost (larger gen especially if you have electric stove, dryer, heat, water heaters etc).

Like mentioned earlier an interlock kit (prevents both the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time.) would be much less expensive, a lot of the newer panels have kits available. (See photo) It is more appropriate if you're using a smaller generator, and if you're handy, a DIY project.

A transfer switch must be sized to handle the entire current of the main panel and fairly complex to install, but if you're going to do a whole house generator probably the route to go... of course then there's the option of manual or an automatic transfer switches... either ain't gonna be cheap, and neither are DIY projects .
