    T/C contender

It has been brought to my attention that some people might be more interested in just the frame, so I am will to seperate the barrel and frame. Will sell the frame and grip for $250. Sell barrel for $200 with dies and brass.

One other note, if you want just the barrel make sure the frame you have is a registered as a handgun and not a rifle per laws regulating short barrels on rifle frames.

can you get me a measurement of the barrel dia. at the muzzle? you have any brass for it?

the muzzle is approx. 0.715" and I have 50 pieces of brass already sized to 30 cal. also have a set of redding dies for it. FYI the brass is 221 fireball brass necked to 30 cal.

    will 223 not work????

223 brass can be used but it is more difficult to deal with. You have to cut the case down on length, neck size it, and depending on the chamber of the particular gun may have to turn the neck down. I had some 221 fireball brass on hand and used it, much easier to deal with. I have heard some people use a small tubing cutter to cut the 223 brass to length and then neck size it. But that was just too much hassel for me.

One other thing, the reason 221 fireball brass is used is because it shares the same head dimensions as the 223 but the case is short enough to load the larger 220 and 240 gr. bullets and still function in the AR platforms and mags. Don't have to have a special bolt or mags for the 300 whisper. But don't be fooled there are some 30-223 barrels floating around out there for the contender, they are custom barrels but they are out there. Don't confuse the 300 whisper (300-221) with the 30-223 they are not the same.

Use the .221 case, it will be much easier. In addition to shortening and probably having to ream or turn the necks, you are going to need to anneal the necks because you will have work hardened the brass. If you don't anneal, the necks will crack prematurely. Trust this from an old wildcatter (over the years, I have necked up, necked down, shortened and fire formed an untold number of cases). Make it easy on yourself.

I deer hunted with J.D. Jones about 15 years ago, and he brought a pile of toys. One of them was a .300 Whisper AR 15 with a 16 inch barrel and a scope with several dots below the crosshairs for longer distance shooting (200 or so yards). It was a hoot to shoot with 240 gr Sierras. From what I understand, the .300 in a contender with 125 Ballistic Tips is deadly on deer out to @150 yds.

I have heard the same thing. I have shoot the 125 gr Ballistic Tips and a Sierra 130 BTHP out if it. It shoots great not much recoil believe it or not, not hard on the wrist either. When I was shooting it a friend of mine said it sounded it like it was whistling when I fired it. Don't know about sound because I never paid attention to it. Unfortunatly I have not taken a deer with it so I can't say how it performs on deer.

I used to shoot a .30 Herrett that has about the same ballistics. It kills deer pretty well. However, my favorite deer cartridge for a pistol is the 6.5 JDJ. You can get 2400 fps (a little more with VV550) out of a 120 Ballistic Tip. With the sights set 2" high at 100 yds, it hits 2" low at 200 yds. I have killed a pile of whitetail (I used to use it to cull does) and a mule deer with it. I also have used it to kill a bunch of exotics. the brass is super easy to form and I have never lost a case since I started shootign it. The brass really lasts. For those who are unfamiliar with the round, it is a .225 Winchester necked out to 6.5mm then fire-formed to take out most of the taper and to create a 40 degree shoulder. To make it, you just neck it out, load it with a slightly reduced load and go shoot it. Fire-forming rounds are very accurate and I have shot numerous 1/2 minute groups with it at 100 yds.
