I was asked if the orange on the spring is rust.

It is not. It is the coating on the spring that Smith & Wesson uses on this caliber rifle. Below is a side-by-side photo of another SW AR in 5.45 I own that has been shot a few times, and the AR I am selling. The coloration of the spring is still slightly visible.
