Thinking about a 10mm? Anyone here shoot/own one or owned one in the past? Pros/cons?

The idea of 357mag performance in an auto really appealls to me:D

I know the ammo is a little pricey, but what ammo isn't..Lol!
Thinking of a Glock model 20, as I already have a model 17 and love it!

The G20 is a large frame. Put your hands around one before you jump. The 10mm will out perform the 357mag any day. Heavier bullet with close to the same velocity.

I had a G20 for a while. It was a great gun. Most people would not like the recoil but I didnt mind it so much. Bullets are usually not something you can just go pick up at a local store.

I like the .357 sig. Its pretty close to having .357 mag in an auto loader.

I hear you on the frame..I have rather large hands so i don't think that will be a problem, but I will double check that. Thanks for the reminder!
About the performance...I read that some factory is downloaded to tame recoil. Any idea on this or experience? If I buy a 10mm, I want 10mm performance, not .40 performance...Lol

I have been doing a little research on the .357 sig, but was under the impression that it was not up to par with the .357mag. Would it be possible to use a .357sig barrel, slide and mag. on my G17 frame....I heard mention of swapping certain calibers in the Glocks.

There is also the G20SF, which stands for small frame. It is a little smaller. I held both the G20 and G20SF on different days and not having both to compare at the same time I did not feel much difference. But you can tell that there is a big difference between the G20/G20SF and the regular frames like the 17,19,22,23...

I have both the G20 and G29. Great guns, versatile caliber with both commercial and reloads that will run from mild to wild.

I have hands that are probably just a bit larger than average (long fingers) and I have no problem with transitioning to the bigger frame size. FWIW, I shoot the smaller Glocks (G34 and 17 in competition) more often.

The non-SF (older frames) just feel like a good handful of pistol :D

The most studly loadings are available from DoubleTap (Mike McNett) in Texas directly via the Web or Midway is also carrying his loads. Georgia Arms makes some nice once-loaded rounds in the middle category. Or you can always roll your own. I've never bothered with the wimpiest loads...you have a longer .40 shell case...why not put some powder in it :D

Those downloaded factory loads are for practice; Blazer and Georgia Arms.

Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap and Corbon is what you looking for.

    It's between .357mag and .41 Remington mag.

    :)

I like the 180 gr and above bullets so the velocity is a little lower than the lighter grain bullets. But FWIW, here are some figures (had these for a while, current loads may vary):

    DoubleTap
    Gold Dot 165gr. @ 1400fps/ 718ft/lbs
    Gold Dot 180gr. @ 1300fps/ 676ft/lbs
    FMJ MATCH 180gr. @ 1250fps/629ft/lb
    WFN Beartooth 200gr @ 1300fps/ 750 ft/lbs

    Remington
    180gr. FMJ @ 1150fps/ 529 ft/lb

    Winchester
    175gr @ 1290 @ 649 ft/bs

    Georgia Arms
    180gr HP +P @ 1150fps/ 528 ft/lbs
    180gr. FMJ @ 1110fps/ 483 ft/lb

    Federal
    180gr. @ 1030fps/ 425 ft/lb

    Hornady
    180 gr. JHP @ 1,180 fps/ 556 ft/lb
    XTP 200gr @ 1250fps/ 694ft/ lbs

just remeber in the 10mm on home reloads don't push it on the powder the 10mm glock is left unsupported and Hot loads have been know to rupture the brass case send the magazine for a fast trip to the ground
    and somtimes worse
I have shot the 10mm Glock and the factor loads commaded respect ( recoil) the guy who owned it likes it and it is his turn to gun in the house but you will Will feel the defernce between that and a 40sw

    That's the whole idea ;)

Use the right powder, good brass and stay within specs and you will be fine. FWIW, Federal brass is more likely to crack (not bulge) after a few loadings

I use stock Glock barrels and even the hottest DT loads are A-OK.

If using hot loads, switching to a Wolfe guide rod and spring( 22# in the G20, 21# for the G29) can save a little frame battering. That's what Mike at DT recommends and it works for me. YMMV.

I have a S&W Model 610 that shoots 10mm. It's really a heck of a cartridge. The 610 can take the hottest loaded 10mm and laugh. I understand that people have the cylinder bored out and also shoot 10mm automag from it as well. So now you have a revolver that can shoot 10mm automag, 10mm, and 40 s&w that's pretty versatile.

I had a Colt Delta Elite and loved it. That platform handled the 10mm very well and it was a pleasure to shoot, and carry.

No caliber is obsolete as long as there are people who enjoy shooting it.

Earlier posters are right on as far as directing you toward full 10mm loads. I did keep some ".40 power" loads just to check fit and function at targets.

If I wanted a 10mm today, I would seek out another Delta Elite.

    Thanks for all the replies....
Its not that I'm a recoil junkie, i just dont like lower power rounds in a higher power gun...i.e. 38's in a 357mag. I mean the reason I like the 357mag is the power. I'm not dogging the .38, I think its a good round, just that I like shooting the hotter stuff. Also, like it for woods carry.

I want to step up from the 9mm and thats why I was looking into the a hotter round like the 10mm...I like the positive feed back, thus far. I dont reload, so I will be sticking w/ factory ammo for now. I guess that will be a con....price. But, hey we cant take it with us:D
