    2008 CAMP PERRY REPORT

    Twelve Louisiana shooters attended CMP week at Camp Perry for the 106th National Rifle Matches. CMP week consists of the National Trophy Matches and the CMP Games Events. Those in attendance were Jim Biermann, John Ferguson, Don Hackford, Jay Hunt, Danny Hudson, Bob Jenkins, Buck Kliebert, Mike Liuzza (our sole junior representative), Bruce Pickering, Gary Schwabe, Mike Strikmiller and Dan Zelenka. Each shooter participated in several events, the highlights of which are below. Complete results are available at www.odcmp.com “National Trophy Matches Results”.

    The President’s Rifle Match is the first and arguably the most difficult of the National Trophy Matches. It is a 30 shot match without sighters consisting of 10 shots slow fire at 200 yards from the standing position, 10 shots rapid fire at 300 yards from the prone position, and 10 shots slow fire from the prone position at 600 yards. It leaves little room for error. The top 100 finishers are the “President’s 100" and receive medals and shoulder tabs for their accomplishment. Military shooters are authorized to wear these on their uniforms. The cut for the “President’s 100" was 285-7X. The best finish for a Louisiana shooter was 192nd out of 1168 by Dan Zelenka with a 281-6X.

    The National Trophy Individual Match is a 50 shot match without sighters that is similar to local Excellence in Competition matches. It consists of 10 shots slow fire at 200 yards from the standing position, 10 shots rapid fire at 200 yards from the sitting position, 10 shots rapid fire at 300 yards from the prone position, and 20 shots slow fire from the prone position at 600 yards. Medals are awarded to those competitors finishing above the score of the top 10% of the “non-distinguished” shooters. A “non-distinguished” shooter is one who has not yet earned the coveted title of “Distinguished Rifleman” by accumulating 30 award points in Excellence in Competition matches. The Louisiana contingent performed well this year with Dan Zelenka earning a gold medal with a score of 481-14X, Buck Kliebert a silver medal with a score of 477-13X and Bob Jenkins a bronze medal with a 473-13X. In addition, Buck was awarded 10 EIC points. Dan and Bob are both “Distinguished” and Buck has now accumulated 26 EIC points toward that goal. We are pulling for Buck to earn his final points in the near future.

    The Hearst Doubles Match is the newest National Trophy Match, established in 2006. This is a two man team match firing the same 30 shot format as the President’s Match. Range conditions and mental mis-steps took their toll on the Louisiana boys and it showed in their scores. The best finishing team at 37th out of 236 was Buck Kliebert and Mark Altazin (a Louisiana boy temporarily displaced to Texas) with a 566-12X.

    For the second year in a row, after almost two decades without representation, Louisiana fielded a state service rifle team for the National Trophy Team Match. This match is a six man team match firing the same 50 shot format as the National Trophy Individual Match. This year’s team members were Dan Zelenka (captain), Bob Jenkins (coach), Danny Hudson, Jay Hunt, Buck Kliebert and Bruce Pickering. The team finished in 34th place out of 57 teams with a score of 2758-43X, bettering last year’s finish by 5 places and 6 points.

    The CMP Games Events consist of the M1 Carbine, 1903 Springfield, Vintage Military Rifle and John C. Garand matches. The M1 Carbine Match is fired at 100 yards and consists of 10 sighting shots, 10 slow fire shots from the prone position, 10 rapid fire shots from the prone position, 10 rapid fire shots from the sitting or kneeling position and 10 slow fire shots from the standing position. The remaining three matches are shot at 200 yards and consist of 5 sighting shots, 10 slow fire shots from the prone position, 10 rapid fire shots from the prone position and 10 slow fire shots from the standing position. In all matches except the Vintage Military Rifle, surplus ball ammo is issued and must be used. All of our shooters fired in at least one of the games events, and the following medals were received:

    Jay Hunt - Silver in Springfield and Bronzes in Garand and Vintage Military Rifle;
    Danny Hudson - Golds in Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle and Silver in Garand;
    Bob Jenkins - Gold in Vintage Military Rifle;
    Buck Kliebert - Gold in Vintage Military Rifle and Bronze in Springfield;
    Gary Schwabe - Silver in Garand and Bronzes in M1 Carbine and Vintage Military Rifle;
    Mike Strikmiller - Bronze in Garand; and
    Dan Zelenka - Silvers in Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle.

    In addition to the forgoing, Bob Jenkins was awarded Distinguished Rifleman Badge number 1881 on stage at the awards ceremony at Camp Perry. Congratulations to Bob in achieving this prestigious honor, and congratulations to the other Louisiana shooters who participated in the 106th National Trophy Rifle Matches.

    Nick,

    I noticed from your profile that you are training to be a range officer at Honey Island. 5 of the 12 guys who went to Perry are also range officers out there. you should hook up with them and come shoot some highpower.
