Anybody loading 45/70? If so would you wanna share any data or loads?

    I'm trying this out today

    325gr FTX
    45gr IMR 3031
    Oal 2.6
Should be in the 1450fps range ( fairly moderate recoil)

Looking to shoot lead projectiles..... Anyone know if this is too hot for lead?

    Thx guys!

    Whoa there!!!!!

    Go easy on the 3031.

45 grains of 3031 with a 405gr lead bullet got me to 1600 fps on my chrony. That's with brand new starline brass from an 18" marlin 1895gbl.

I'm gonna bet a lighter jacketed bullet is just gonna zing out of the barrel.

45 grs under a 405gr bullet is a lot more than 45grs under a 325gr bullet. Also lead has less friction in the bore than jacketed. Still that load looks moderate to lower end. I'm pushing Hornady 300gr JHP's around 2000fps and is way under the 2400fps loads. I like H4198 for 45-70 loads but can't find any and am using IMR4198. I've pushed 405gr Rem JSP's up t 1800fps but the fun factor shooting off the bench goes quickly. I usually back them off to around 16-1700fps. The Rem factory loads will do around 11-1200fps. The Handirifle can take the higher end loads just fine maybe short of Ruger #1/bolt action loads.
