I have a slight puzzle with a reload on my 30-06 in my M1. I had my first broken case in over 20 years of reloading for it:wtc:. The case came apart right at the base of the neck. I didn't have a case extractor (since remedied) so I took my M1 to a gunsmith. He was able to extract the broken neck, called me and said "don't crimp your bullets." Now, I don't crimp (Hornady 168 BTHP) so I didn't know what he meant. He showed the extracted neck to me and it looked as if there was a heavy roll crimp on it. Now, I didn't put that there, and none of the other cases that the M1 fires come out looking like that.

Having never used a broken case extractor do these put a "roll crimp" on a case when they come out? Just wondering what could have done this?

How many times has this case been reloaded ? The roll in the neck came from the case parted pushing the neck into the throat of the chamber
