Buttigieg points to how roads are 'designed and built' as the reason for racial disparities in road fatalities

"Racial disparities" continue to be a focus for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, according to a recent appearance on MSNBC’s "PoliticsNation" on Saturday.

"It’s something that deserves more attention, which is why I’m working to bring more attention to it. We have a crisis when it comes to roadway fatalities in America. We lose about 40,000 people every year. It’s a level that is comparable to gun violence. And we see a lot of racial disparities. Black and Brown Americans, tribal citizens and rural restaurants are much more likely to lose their lives whether it’s in a car or as a pedestrian being hit by a car," Buttigieg said.

"...rural restaurants are losing their lives"???

He continued, "There are a lot of reasons related to discrimination and related to even the ways that roads are designed and built, who has access to a safe street design that has crosswalks and good lighting, who doesn’t have that access that can drive disparities, and we have a responsibility to act on that."

Buttigieg has previously highlighted discrimination within America’s infrastructure. "What we’re doing is we are reconnecting people who may have been disconnected or divided by discriminatory decisions in the past," Buttigieg said in November 2021.. "That helps everybody. I don’t know why anybody would be against reconnecting people who have been divided by discriminatory decisions in the past."

Is he taking word salad lessons from the veep now?

"On our nation’s roads and highways, Black motorists have experienced disproportionate scrutiny and excessive force under the guise of traffic enforcement," the letter read. "As Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), we urge you to condemn the status quo of traffic enforcement and develop reforms to reduce racial inequities in traffic stops."

And that is the fault of no crosswalks and street lights???

Just wait, Cedric Richmond will claim that the Claiborne part of I-10 inNOLA must be torn down because Racist & they only put it there because “they” didn’t want to disturb the white foke. Not true!
When Moon Landrau was mayor, they where going to run a second stretch along the river front threw the French Quarter. So threw a Black neighborhood & a White neighborhood. The Claiborne part was finished & the FQ was an additional route. So the FQ part was going to screw all the rich white people in the quarter. A preservation group was set up to stop the interstate. Later 610 was run threw City Park saving the FQ.

Show us numbers Bootygag. I'm not interested in your opinion. How someone so incredibly stupid and incompetent gets appointed to a cabinet level position is beyond me. It just reinforces how much of a joke American politics has become. We are the laughingstock of the planet.

They've already called it exactly as you said, but the truth is even more difficult. in the late 1950's and early 1960's when they looked at finding a place for an Intestate for New Orleans, they saw the long stretch of the New Basin Canal as an ideal location to place the new interstate. It was a long-used, but by then unnecessary man-made waterway (at the cost of several thousand Irish lives). This path was ideal for the route from the west, which at that point crossed Jefferson Parish land that was mostly farmland, and which would displace almost no homes or businesses.

The trick, then was to pick a route from the east and where it would meet up with the New Basin Route. Some suggested a Riverfront Expressway, which met with furious opposition from historic preservationists. The next logical route to go - one which would displace as few people as possible - was to use the extremely wide median of Claibourne Avenue, a street that went from St' Bernard in the East to Jefferson in the West. It was also already part of US Highway 90. That is the course that was taken.

When I-610 was built, there was no such consideration about trying not to displace people. They were after a shortcut route that would bypass Downtown and did not care what was displaced. Hence, a nearly straight-line route cut through City Park and forced hundreds of people (of all races and socio-economic groups) and business to move, expropriating their properties.

The current proponents of dismantling the I-10 do not really care about the alleged racial discrimination of its origin, nor do they really believe their own rhetoric about it causing the economic collapse of the "Mom and Pop" businesses along the route (the same type of businesses along St. Claude and along the uptown end of Claiborne also went away during this time period - due to economic reasons like the rise of the "big box" retailers like Sears, Walmart, etc.). These people are actually part of the left-leaning folks who want to herd people into the cities (walkable, sustainable communities in their jargon), force people into reliance on public transportation and give up their personal vehicles (look how well that did for New Yorkers during Covid), all in the name of saving "Mother Gaia" from the plague of humanity. They are using the standard Marxist-inspired method of instilling division between people - whether or not such division is warranted - as a means toward their end of establishing a Utopia here on earth.
