"I feel it is every adult's civic duty to be adequately prepared to defend himself and/or those around him."

or

"Because no one can know for sure if this is the day I might need it."

or

"The Bible says that you know not what the day will bring, and I want to be prepared."

first i carry to protect myself, second b/c you never know who may need your help. it is a responsibility that i willingly accept. by accepting that responsibility i owe it to anyone around me to be proficient as to protect them in the event that i have to protect myself. if that makes any since...
