Have him look into Diesel Mechanic field. And specifically the 'fuel pump' side of it. Fuel pump's are the heart of the engine, and most pump guys work in climate controlled, sterile shops.

Our diesel and marine techs make some decent hourly wages and have good benefits. In addition, some of our marine techs get to do some traveling to remote/tropical places to work on engines. And I know we're always hiring technicians.

Like some have said it all depends on his drive for success. If it is a passion and he doesn't feel like he has to stay in the area there are a lot of great schools across the country. Wyotech, UTI in Houston or Nashville are all great schools with a big alumni base. He will have to be open though to move across the country to chase the dollar. He can stay local and the ones that I see that are successful are very passionate about what they do and strive for perfection in their shops. I personally know of one body shop and 4 custom shops that are very successful. 3 have been to college, one just worked his butt off and one went to UTI in Nashville for body work.

Most of the techs who claim you can't make a good living doing this either aren't good and don't know it or work for the wrong company/shop.

I never said you can't make good money. My point is that there are better paying trades out there. If someone REALLY loves cars, then go for it. But if he's doing it doing it because he thinks he is good at it and his main motivation is he can make good money...But doesn't really love cars...THen I would advise him to do his homework. IMO....The way to go is a licensed trade. Welding, plumber, electrician...etc.

Anytime the workforce needs to be licensed...then those in that trade tend to do better IMO.
