Going look at a car in Mississippi this weekend. Has anyone ever bought a car from a private seller out of state and then registered it in Louisiana? I just need to know what I need to get from the seller and what I need to bring to the DMV. This would be my first time doing this as well as the first time for the seller, so we are both clueless to the correct process. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Your best bet would be to have a MISSISSIPPI notary notarize the bill of sale and title.
Also get a copy or take a picture of the FRONT and REAR of the sellers drivers license.

Mississippi is a non notary state when it comes to vehicle titles, but they will notarize these items for you.

I brought the title to a notary in the state where I bought it (Arizona), with the seller, did the transfer, and I think I kept their plates & returned them when I got it registered in my name here in La.

Not necessary to have notarized out of state. Buy it, seller signs the title and a witness signs it. Do a bill of sale and get a copy of their license. Go to notary when you are back in louisiana. Ive purchesed out of state from an individual and had no issues following above process. I called a local notary prior to purchasing for guidance.

I forgot, I also did this with a California car.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've been getting mixed messages about whether the seller has to be there when everything is notarized or not. Mississippi appears to be a non notary needed state, but I know Louisiana wants all kinds of stuff. I think I play it safe and call the DMV/local notary just to be safe.

The notary has to watch him sign the document therefore he has to be there!!

always my assumption as well, so I required it even if a State law where I bought it was flexible. I've never bought a car and had it shipped (like ebay) though, even when I bought on ebay I went to the car and had the owner meet me at a notary.

I just did this... Both the title AND Bill of Sale need to be signed before a notary. Make sure the information on the back of the MS title is correct or you'll need to have a correction affidavit.
