Looking for some opinions on the best survival knife.

now....I dont mean a knife with a unscrewable bottom and compass...blah blah blah.

Just a good, durable, versatile blade.

let me put it this way....If you could ONLY take ONE knife into the hills with you, and you dont know when your coming back.

What would be sheathed on your side?

    thanks in advance,
    J

    My Steve Woods Hide Fighter...

    http://www.knifeart.com/hide.html
    [FONT=arial, helvetica]ARTIST: Steve Woods
    BLADE SIZE: 6"
    TOTAL SIZE: 11"
BLADE MATERIAL: Stainless S30V Steel - blasted
HANDLE: Black G-10 with a 3D contoured handle
SHEATH: SpecOps Brand Black Nylon sheath with kydex lining
    WEIGHT: 10.2 oz.
COMMENTS: Steve Woods made this specially for several US military members heading overseas. The full tang design is very strong and durable. Three pins in the handle of very tough black G-10. Filed traction areas on the blade spine and butt of the knife. The knife also has an index finger guard that is integral to the knife. A high quality Spec-Ops sheath completes this field ready package.

I prefer the SOG seal PUP just to cut down on weight. I don't see the need for the extra length.
Second choice would be a machette...

I like the idea of a multi-tool. I love my SOG Powerlock and use it daily. Other than a brutal knife fight, I can't think of anything in the woods I couldn't do with it.

If you're set on a knife, I'd think any decent quality fixed blade (SOG, KaBar, Cold Steel, etc etc) with serrations would do the job.

I've always wondered why no one makes a quality version of the "survival knife" we all had as kids. I'd love a big fixed blade with storage handle and survival goodies that actually held an edge and didn't break the first time you looked at it wrong.

I think you can get it cheaper than what SOG lists.

or a type of kukri. Several companies make them. Ka-Bar and Cold Steel are 2.

Has the SOG Seal Team Elite for ~ $90 (link above). Personally, I carry the
SOG Trident all the time but, I also have an old Buck hunting knife in the car always.

+1 on a Kukri. It does the job of both a knife, hatchet, and machete.

This is mine, and I would highly recommend it for the price. The only downside is that it is is very heavy, but makes up for that with sheer indestructibility.

I'm pretty sure this company offers a warranty where if you break or bend it, you get two for free.

Also, the factory is routinely blessed with ritual animal sacrifice, which definitely helps.
