Checking serial numbers

How do you go about checking a serial number on a gun being bought person to person. I trust the guy but I want to cover my 6. Is there a website I can access or do I need to go through an FFL holder?

There's this one, but it has a VERY small number of serial numbers reported.

Next best bet, would be if you have a LE buddy. That's what I usually use.

but if you call your local pd/so with a few serial numbers that you picked up at a gun show or whatever, theyll usually run it for ya if they arent busy.
