CMP Announces Loss of Former USAMU Member
The Civilian Marksmanship Program reports that former United States Army Marksmanship Unit member Master Sgt. Jared Van Aalst died August 4 in Afghanistan. A team leader, squad leader, instructor and shooter in the Army Marksmanship Unit, Van Aalst earned his Distinguished Rifleman Badge in 2004. In 2005, then-Staff Sgt. Van Aalst bested 147 other soldiers to win the service-rifle individual championship in the U.S. Army Small Arms Championships at Fort Benning. Van Aalst, assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was on his sixth overseas deployment.
