I'm looking to get a new little varmint rifle for father's day and would like some educated(?) opinions. I've narrowed my choices down to two models....
.17 HMR
.22-250
I've been wanting a .17 hmr, and would choose it over .22-250 due to ammo prices. .17 doesn't have the range, but would suit my usage much better, 100yd paper targets and the occasional 100-150 yard max shot at vermin at the camp.
choose the 17 if your doing lots of shooting at 100yds or less or so.
choose the 22 250 if you need to really reach out and touch someone or if your not shooting much. Its also better for the larger vermin (cyote, stray dogs etc).
I'm with SKYWLKR, the .17 is dead on out to 200 yards and beyond, as long as the wind isn't kicking. Ammo isn't incredibly expensive and it's a really fun round to shoot. +1 for the .17HMR.
Now, you can make an educated decision. As you can see, the 22 250 has more energy at 500 yards than the 17 hmr at muzzle. Two completely different uses for these. I would not use a 17 for anything very far, personally.
