Great movie, which surprisingly portrayed many of the actual events occurring during Zaitsev's service in Stalingrad. Sadly, in real life, his love interest (fellow sniper Tania Chernova) thought he was killed in the war, and they ended up moving on with their lives. Only decades later (in 1969) did she learn he had survived. I'd love to read his own book "Notes of a Sniper", which is supposed to be very good.
Way back when, I was watching this movie while working on the very first P-Sight prototype. Very fitting!
I've always wondered how much of the Zeitsev sniper duel story was true vs. how much was Soviet propaganda....There's been several versions of the story involving the name of the supposed German sniper ace he took out...."Heinz Thorvald" (I think), and "Walter Koenig" seem to be the two names that came up.....
I guess the traditional story is likely based on actual events- but mixed with a little Soviet fiction thrown in for good measure as a moral booster during a tough time....
