Anybody else got a favorite hand-me-down family rifle that's special to you? I've got a Savage 4c .22 bolt rifle that belonged to one of my Grandfathers. It can mix shorts, longs and long rifles, is in immaculate condition and is an absolute tackdriver. I just shot it again today and fell in love with it all over again. Beautiful wood underneath the original finish. I've thought about stripping it down just to bring out the grain of the wood but something's not right about that. It came with a 5 round magazine but there are 10 rounders available and I've got one on the way just for funsies. It was apparently made in the 1930's (before serial numbers) and I'm sure he used it to feed his family during the depression. Boy if that rifle could talk.

I have none yet but I'm fairly certain my mom will give me her dad's old Beretta .32 that he had from WWII (i think).

    Screamin Eagle,

I also have a savage model 4 (dont know about the C) that was my dads rifle. It has the larger 10 round or so detachable mag, and when I was younger that was a squirrel whackin' machine with CB caps in the woods behind the house. Only mag fed bolt action .22 I've seen that will work 100%with the shorts.

He got it when the family moved to Fla (over 50 years ago), and my uncle being the eldest, "called dibs" on one bedroom, and of course my dad was upset, as it was the bigger room and he had to settle for the other one, but when he was hanging clothes in the closet, low and behold, there was the savage on the shelf :D

eh, I just get shotguns that aren't worth much and ring your ear drums while kicking like a mule (Remington 878 Automaster), also got Dad's Marlin Glenfield model 75. I've been taking his guns one by one, next on my list is his model 1100, then I'll give him the pleasure of keeping my grandpa's Browning 16 ga. (now that thing has delivered many meals to the table)... at least until his time is up, then it'll be mine.

I've got my dad's Enfield #5 jungle carbine. He bought it from crescent gun on Tulane Ave for $16... I love that old gun...
I have my father-in-law's Iver Johnson .38 S&W. It was flooded in Katrina and needs to be refinished still.
I've also acquired my grandfather's 8mm French Lebel revolver. It needs some work though. I can't find a replacement cylinder hand and a few other internals.

It's not a rifle but a cool story. My dad had a smith 15-3 in his truck back in the mid 80's. A guy that washed it stole it out of the truck. My dad reported it stolen to the Sheriff's office. He couldn't prove the guy stole it because it had been several days before he noticed it missing. Anyway about 7 years later the sheriff called him and told him they found his gun. It had been used in a murder and was in an evidence locker. The sheriff told him when they were through with the trial he could have it back. He got it and gave it to me about a year ago. It's in reasonable good shape. I took it to the range and it shoots lights out. I have it in my safe so it won't get stolen again;).

Got a neat little .32 auto pistol made by Dryse that my dad brought back from Germany at the end of WWII. It was a war trophy, still has the original leather holster with flap and spare mag storage, and the spare mag. It's a shooter that works well to this day. Keep it clean and oiled, and I've never had a misfire.

On the same note, back in the early 70's I had just returned from Vietnam and was feeling kinda paranoid without my rifle so asked a State Trooper friend of mine to be on the lookout for a used AR15. A couple of weeks later he called me and asked me for a blank check - he had a line on something. When I got home the next day there was a Colt AR15 SP1 (the original model with no forward assist and the thin 1/12 twist barrel) with a 4 digit serial number, a bipod, a bayonet, 10 mags, and 800 rounds of ammunition. The cost? $275.00. This will be a hand-me-down to my son.
