Just acquired a new Gerber Bolt fixed blade, which has been discontinued. Nice knife with a 4-inch partially serrated blade, perfect for the woods and the boat. It ain't dull, but it ain't sharp either. I was under the impression Gerber blades were very good from the get go. Is this normal for Gerber? I have read Gerbers are hard to sharpen on account titanium in or coating the blades.

The Gerbers I've dealt with had a blade profile that was fat near the edge.
I thinned mine out. Can't comment on the coating. I find getting edge deburred is the tricky part on the Gerber. It is what makes the difference on any blade.

Honestly I see where spending more money on a better knife is worth it. I can sharpen mine regularly and loosing it would not have me upset for days. So it is a trade off.
