Gun serial numbers

I have a question about serial numbers. I've bought a few handguns and traded since high school and planning on taking a course to get my permitthis year. I have a few that I have bought new at a store but was not planning on carrying any of them.what I was planning on carrying i do not know the history on the weapon. How do I check this with out getting in trouble?

Got it covered, my supervisor brother is a LEO and will run the numbers for me. Better to know now that on the side of the road during a stop.
