Tell your friend to get a loud alarm, wire in all access points and use it.

Have him get a bunch of good spotlights. Anyone looking for easy pickings will leave on the alarm sounding and lights often equal confrontation.

In this day and age the average person cannot adequately protect themselves against an assailant determined to do them great bodily harm except with a firearm. Also, you must have the firearm available, loaded and ready to use. In a sudden and unexpected confrontation in public you are probably not going to be ready or quick enough. However, at home or while traveling you can be prepared to have a reasonable chance of protecting yourself and family. It is obvious that everyone who is either killed or injured in an attack was not prepared or they hesitated. The best plan is to always be alert, where ever you are, and try not to put yourself in a precarious place or situation. Most assailants will generally make a brief attempt at "conversation", such as, "hey, you got a light?", or something similar. This is to catch you off guard and then they "pounce".

Sit the pretty wife down and explain to her that sometime during her and your lifetime you will have to take an action to protect yourselves and the only real chance you will have is with a firearm. Sorry, but that's the world we live in.
