I’ve talked about this before, but for all the budding entomologists and honey connoisseurs out there I’ll give a brief run down of what’s happening this year in the bee yard. The main flow in Louisiana usually runs from May to June and believe it or not this is when the majority of the honey is made. The dates vary from year to year depending on the what’s happening as far-/ the weather goes. We had a very mild spring so things were heating up fast and going good but that late freeze knocked the socks off the tallow trees in lots of places and this put the brakes on the trees and the bees. The bees were very slow to build up and the populations were not where they needed to be. The freeze also affected the tallow bloom and the nectar was off in volume which equates to a sub par honey year. The crop will be short from last year but until the harvest is complete you never know. I also included some pictures of a colony of bees in a old house. You can see the entrance where they were going in and then see what they built behind it. They are amazing creatures. As always if you need honey I can fix you up. I have a self serve kiosk in BR which is open 24/7. I also have done comb honey and will haves domed creamed honey in the near future.
